A short story

Every Saturday Daniel and his family go to the beach. They live far from the beach, but once a week the family gets into the car and Daniel's father drives for hours until they arrive.

Daniel's parents love the beach. Daniel and his sister and brother love the beach. The family's dog loves the beach very much.

But it is a problem to go to the beach every week. Daniel's father gets tired from driving so many hours. The rest of the family gets tired from sitting in the car for so many hours. Daniel's mother says: "It's fun in the beach, but it takes too much time to get there and back!"

Daniel and his sister and brother are very sad. They want to go to the beach, but it is a problem. They try to go the swimming pool, but it is not the same thing.

One day Daniel's parents come to talk with the kids. They say: "We have a problem to go to the beach every week, but we love the beach, and you love the beach, and the dog loves the beach. So we have a solution. We need to live near the beach!"

Daniel and his sister and brother are very happy! Now they live near the beach. They go to the beach every day!

Restroom or bathroom?

A true story

Laura is at the airport. She waits for her flight. 

Her flight is to Berlin, and it is 4 hours away. 

Laura walks around the airport and looks at the shops. She has a nice time.

After an hour she wants to visit the bathroom. She searches for it, but she doesn't find it.

"Where is the bathroom?" she asks herself.

She looks and looks but she can't find it. She starts asking people where it is.

Laura: "Excuse me sir, could you please tell me where is the bathroom?"

Man: "You mean the restroom, right?"

Laura: "No, I mean the bathroom."

Man: "Well, the restroom is over there." He says and walks away.

Laura doesn't understand. She asks a lady: "Excuse me madam, could you please tell me where is the bathroom?"

"The restroom is over there," the lady answers and walks away.

Laura is confused. "What's their problem? I need to use the bathroom and they send me to rest?! I don't need a restroom, I need the bathroom!"

After a while Laura gives up. She feels tired of all this walking and asking. She decides that maybe they are all right and she does need to rest.

She walks to the restroom. Now she is surprised. She realizes the restroom is actually the name for a public bathroom!

Car or dog?

'Cat versus Dog'

There is some truth in the common saying that while dogs become attached to the persons, cats are generally attached to the places. A dog will follow his master anywhere, but a cat keeps to the house it is used to. Even when the house changes hand, the cat will remain there, so long as it is kindly treated by the new owners. 

A cat does not seem to be capable of the personal devotion often shown by a dog. It thinks most of its own comfort, and its love is only cupboard love.

Hi Martin, The journey to Scotland was really boring.  First there was the train journey from Brighton to Victoria Station in London.  That was about an hour.  After that, I got the underground from Victoria Station to Euston Station.  That took about twenty-five minutes and it was confusing to find the correct platform.  Finally I got the train to Scotland.  It was a fast train, but the journey took nearly six hours.  It was boring!  I didn’t sleep because there were two noisy babies and their noisy parents in seats near me. 

Fiona and Robert met me at Glasgow Central Station.  Their house is fantastic.  There are six bedrooms, three bathrooms and skylights too-skylights are windows in the roof of the rooms.  Fiona and Robert are both artists and there are pictures everywhere. It’s a really cool house.

The weather here in Scotland is terrible.  Yesterday I went for a swim in the loch - that’s the Scottish word for lake – and I nearly froze! I don’t plan on doing that again.

In the evening we went to a party.  We did Scottish dancing until midnight and got very hot.  The music was a bit boring, but I still had a great time.  Everyone was very friendly and it was good exercise!  I’d like to go to another party but I’m not sure I can.

4 Read and answer the questions.

Well, yesterday, summer came to parts of Britain at last.  South-east England was the sunniest part of Britain yesterday, with seven hours of sun in Canterbury.  This was the warmest part, too.  We had 25 degrees Centigrade in some places.  The coldest part of Britain was the north of Scotland, with temperatures of only 7 degrees Centigrade. 

The west of Britain had some very wet weather.  The rainiest weather was in the west of Wales, where it rained for 24 hours.  In the east of England there was no rain, but it was very windy.

Fog was a problem in the south of Scotland yesterday, and there were some bad traffic accidents.

Now, a word about the weather abroad.  If you are going to Florida, be careful! Yesterday, temperatures were the hottest for fifty years, with a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Centigrade near Miami!
